Sciatica Treatment in Richmond, VA?

Sciatica is one of the most common and frustrating conditions patients walk into our Richmond office with. The pain can range from a dull ache in the lower back to a sharp, shooting sensation that travels down through the buttock, thigh, and sometimes all the way to the foot. Some patients describe numbness or tingling. Others say their legs feel heavy or weak. Every case is a little different, but the underlying issue is the same: something is irritating or compressing the sciatic nerve.

If you’ve been searching for “sciatica pain treatment Richmond VA,” you’re in the right place.

At Jamison Family Chiropractic, we take a hands-on approach to sciatica treatment from day one. That means a combination of chiropractic adjustments and corrective exercises tailored to what’s actually driving your symptoms – not a one-size-fits-all protocol. The goal isn’t just to get you out of pain. It’s to address the root cause so the pain doesn’t keep coming back.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis by itself – it’s a description of symptoms caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in your body. It runs from the lower spine, through the pelvis, and down the back of each leg. When something puts pressure on that nerve or the nerve roots that form it, you feel it.

The most common causes of sciatic nerve irritation include:

  • Disc herniation – a bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar spine pressing on a nerve root
  • Spinal stenosis – bony overgrowth narrowing the spinal canal where the nerve exits
  • Piriformis syndrome – a tight or inflamed piriformis muscle in the buttock compressing the sciatic nerve as it passes underneath (or in some people, through) the muscle
  • Joint dysfunction – restricted or misaligned joints in the lower spine or pelvis creating inflammation around the nerve
  • Pregnancy-related changes – changes in pelvic alignment during pregnancy can put pressure on the sciatic nerve

Understanding which of these is the actual source of your symptoms is critical, because the treatment approach changes depending on the cause. That’s why we don’t guess – we assess.

How Do You Know If It’s Sciatica?

Sciatica has a fairly distinctive pattern. Most patients describe some combination of the following:

  • Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the back of the leg
  • A sharp, burning, or shooting quality to the pain – not just a general ache
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Weakness in the affected leg, making it harder to walk or stand
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or standing for long periods
  • Symptoms that are typically worse on one side

If the pain stays in your lower back without traveling into the leg, it may be a different condition. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, that’s exactly what a proper evaluation is for.

“I don’t usually write these sort of reviews, but I have to make an exception in this case, because Dr. Drew Jamison is pretty exceptional. I can’t say enough good things about him and the care he has provided me. At my wife’s suggestion, I started going to him a few months ago because I had terrific back & leg pain; I could hardly move, get up out of the bed, or drive. Thanks to Dr. Drew, that pain is all but gone and my mobility is back! He works with you to accomplish the treatment goals with not only in-office services, but with recommended at-home exercises to help maintain your progress. I really like the way he can explain what is going on with you in terms you can understand.”

How We Treat Sciatica at Jamison Family Chiropractic

Every sciatica patient who comes into our office starts with a thorough evaluation. We want to understand where the nerve is being irritated, what’s causing the irritation, and how long it’s been going on. That assessment guides everything we do from there.

Our approach combines multiple techniques based on what your body needs:

Chiropractic Adjustments

We use a combination of diversified (manual) adjustments, drop table technique, and instrument-assisted methods depending on the patient and the severity of their symptoms. The goal of the adjustment is to restore proper joint motion in the lumbar spine and pelvis, which reduces inflammation around the nerve and allows the body to start healing. Some patients respond best to manual adjustments. Others do better with a gentler approach. We tailor the technique to you.

Depending on how you present to the office, I will determine what technique fits best for the best possible outcome. For example, if you present with acute pain and cannot tolerate much, I will usually start with the Arthrostim or drop table adjustment to maximize the positive benefits of the adjustment. As you progress, the technique will often change to improve your spinal mobility to maximize your recovery.

Corrective Exercises from Day One

Just like with our posture correction patients, we don’t wait to start exercises. From your very first visit, we’ll give you specific movements designed to take pressure off the sciatic nerve and strengthen the muscles that support your lower spine and pelvis. The exercises we prescribe depend on what’s causing your sciatica — a disc herniation requires a very different exercise approach than piriformis syndrome.

The adjustments restore joint motion. The exercises teach your body to maintain it. Both together get better results than either one alone.

Certain exercises are better for each presentation, which we will figure out during your exam and subsequent visits. For example, if your sciatica is from a disc bulge, you will start with McKenzie extensions or cobra pose to improve disc health.

A Personalized Treatment Plan

We don’t use cookie-cutter protocols. After your evaluation, we’ll lay out a treatment plan based on the severity and cause of your symptoms, your activity level, and your goals. Some patients see significant relief within a few visits. Others with more complex or longstanding issues need a longer course of care. We’re honest about what to expect upfront so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.

I will adjust your treatment plan based on how well you are progressing, which usually takes a few visits to get a feel for how well you are responding to treatment.

“Saved my life!! Can’t even begin to express my gratitude. I’ve had gnarly sciatica for 5 years. It got so bad I couldn’t even sit up in bed. After a month of 2 visits per week I am right as rain! Five stars!”

Why Chiropractic for Sciatica?

Many patients who come to us for sciatica have already tried other routes – rest, over-the-counter painkillers, muscle relaxers, even steroid injections. Some of those things provide temporary relief, but they don’t address the structural issue that’s irritating the nerve in the first place.

Chiropractic care works differently. Instead of masking the pain, we’re correcting the underlying joint restriction or misalignment that’s putting pressure on the nerve. When the joint moves properly and the surrounding muscles are functioning well, the nerve has space and the inflammation resolves. That’s lasting relief, not just symptom management.

Research supports chiropractic as an effective, conservative treatment for sciatica. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that 60% of patients with sciatica who hadn’t responded to other treatments experienced significant improvement with chiropractic care – comparable to results from surgical intervention.

“Dr. Drew has been my chiropractor for 2 years now. His adjustments have healed me of sciatica, which plagued me for quite a while, despite spending way too much money with another chiropractor before meeting Dr. Drew. His pricing is fantastic, and self-scheduling online is so easy. I highly recommend Jamison Family Chiropractic!”

Frequently Asked
Questions About Sciatica Treatment

These questions come directly from patients in our Richmond office. If yours isn’t answered here, give us a call and we’re happy to help.

How long does it take to recover from sciatica with chiropractic treatment?

It depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms, how long you’ve been dealing with it, and how consistently you follow your treatment plan. Some patients experience significant relief within a few visits. Others with more complex or chronic cases need several weeks of care. We’ll give you an honest assessment after your first visit so you know what to expect.

Is chiropractic safe for sciatica?

Yes. Chiropractic adjustments are a safe, non-invasive treatment for sciatica. We tailor our techniques to your specific condition and comfort level. If a particular approach isn’t appropriate for your case, we’ll use a gentler alternative.

Can sciatica go away on its own?

Mild cases sometimes resolve with rest and time, but the underlying structural issue often remains. That means the pain tends to come back, sometimes worse than before. Addressing the root cause early typically leads to faster recovery and a lower risk of recurrence.

Do I need an X-ray or MRI before starting treatment?

Not always. In many cases, a thorough physical examination gives us the information we need to begin treatment. If imaging is warranted based on your exam findings or if your symptoms aren’t improving as expected, we’ll refer you for the appropriate imaging.

Do you accept insurance for sciatica treatment?

We are a self-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. This allows us to focus entirely on your care without the limitations insurance companies often impose on treatment plans. Our fees are transparent and competitive – visit our pricing page for details.

What’s the difference between sciatica and general lower back pain?

Lower back pain stays in the lower back. Sciatica travels. If your pain radiates from your lower back or buttock down into your leg – especially with a sharp, shooting, or burning quality – it’s likely involving the sciatic nerve. A proper evaluation can confirm the diagnosis.

Can I exercise if I have sciatica?

Yes, and in most cases you should. The right exercises can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and strengthen the muscles that support your spine. The key word is “right” – some common exercises can actually make sciatica worse. We’ll prescribe specific movements based on your condition.

What should I avoid if I have sciatica?

Prolonged sitting is one of the biggest aggravators. Heavy lifting with poor form, excessive bending at the waist, and high-impact activities can also flare up symptoms. We’ll give you specific guidance based on your case during your first visit.
